How to choose the best insoles for ski boots
The right footbed needs to fit two things: your foot and the boot around it.
The best insoles for ski boots match the shape of your feet and leave the right amount of space inside your boots. Arch support, heel fit and thickness all matter. A footbed is one part of the fit, alongside the shell, liner and socks. Start with a boot that fits, then decide whether its existing footbed, a pre-molded ski insole or a custom orthotic is the right choice for you.
What is a ski boot footbed?
A footbed is the layer beneath your foot inside the ski boot liner. You will also see it called an insole. It supports the foot from below; the liner surrounds your foot and ankle, and the shell forms the outside of the boot.
A custom orthotic describes how that underfoot support is made. At Surefoot, it is precision-milled from a scan of your own foot, then fitted to your footwear.

Your fitter checks the shell, footbed and liner together. Custom orthotics and custom liners are options for personalizing that fit; your fitter will recommend a setup for your feet and the way you ski.
Check the fit before choosing more cushioning
First, check the boot itself. Length, width and the space over your instep affect how your foot sits inside it. An insole should not be the starting point for making the wrong shell fit. Our ski boot fit guide explains how the shell, heel, toes and instep are checked.
Next, consider the space the insole takes up. More material under your foot changes the room left inside the liner. Check the fit with thin, ski-specific socks and the boots buckled, rather than judging an insole by how soft it feels in your hand.
The final check is the footbed's shape. Your arch should feel supported, with your heel seated comfortably. A higher arch contour is a different shape, not a rating for better support. If a new insole creates a pressure point or changes the fit across the top of your foot, have the combination checked before skiing in it.
When to consider a custom ski orthotic
A custom orthotic is an option when you want support made from the contours of your own feet. Surefoot uses a scan that records the foot at 538 points, then mills the orthotic from EVA. The orthotic is fitted to the boot, so the result is checked as part of the whole setup.

Will an insole fix ski boots that are too big?
An insole can change the space inside a boot, but it does not change the shell's length. Have the shell and liner fit checked before using an insole to compensate for a roomy boot.
