Atomic Ski Boots

Atomic was founded in Austria in 1955 by Alois Rohrmoser and has built skis and boots in Altenmarkt im Pongau since 1971. It is a race company that learned to make boots, and by 1989 it was the first brand supplying skis, bindings, boots and poles together. The boot most skiers come to Atomic for is the Hawx, and the useful thing to know about the Hawx is that it is one boot in three widths.
Hawx Ultra is the narrow one, a 98 mm last for a slim forefoot and a low instep. Hawx Prime is the 100 mm medium, the shape that suits the most feet. Hawx Magna is the 102 mm wide, with more room across the forefoot and more volume through the calf. Atomic labels them Narrow, Medium and Wide, or LV, MV and HV. The number in the model name is the flex, so a Hawx Ultra 120 and a Hawx Magna 110 are the same family cut for different feet. XTD models sit on those same lasts and add a walk mode. BOA models trade the two lower buckles for a dial and a cable you can turn a click at a time, and Dual BOA adds a second dial on the cuff. Redster TX and the Remedy are the 96 mm race and freeride boots.
Picking between 96, 98, 100 and 102 mm is not something a five minute try-on settles, so every Atomic fitting at Surefoot starts with a 3D scan. Your fitter uses the scan to choose the shell and the size, and the boot can go home as it comes. If you want more, a custom orthotic holds your foot in a neutral position and a foam-injected Surefoot liner replaces the stock liner so there is no dead space left between your foot and the plastic. Both are options at any fitting, not a requirement.

Scan
A 3D scan of both feet gives your fitter length, width and arch in millimeters. It is how we choose between the 96, 98, 100 and 102 mm Atomic lasts instead of guessing.

Custom orthotic
Optional at any fitting. Built from your scan in about 30 minutes, it holds your foot in a neutral position so the shell and liner above it can do their jobs.

Custom liner
Also optional. A Surefoot liner is foam-injected around your foot inside the Atomic shell, replacing the stock liner and setting the fit from day one.

Questions
What is the difference between Atomic Hawx Ultra, Prime and Magna?
Width. They are the same Hawx boot built on three different lasts. Hawx Ultra is 98 mm, which Atomic calls narrow or low volume. Hawx Prime is 100 mm, the medium shape that fits the most feet. Hawx Magna is 102 mm, the wide one, with more room across the forefoot and more volume through the calf. All three widths are measured across the forefoot at a size 26.5. The number in the model name is the flex, not the width.
Which Atomic ski boot is right for wide feet?
The Hawx Magna. Atomic builds it on a 102 mm last and calls it wide, or high volume, and it also allows more room around the calf than the narrower Hawx models. We stock the Magna in a 110 and a 130 flex for men and a 105 for women. A wide foot is not only a wide forefoot, though, so a fitter can also heat Atomic's Memory Fit shells and open the plastic where your scan says you need it.
Are Atomic ski boots true to size?
Atomic sizes in mondopoint, which is the length of your foot in centimeters, so a 26.5 fits a 26.5 cm foot. In that sense they are true to size, and the Atomic boots we carry run in half steps from 19.5 in junior models to 31.5. Where people go wrong is width, not length. The same 26.5 exists as a 98, a 100 and a 102 mm shell. At Surefoot the scan gives us your length and your width in millimeters, so you never size a boot from a chart.
Which Atomic ski boots have BOA?
Most of the Hawx range now does. A BOA model replaces the two lower buckles with a dial and a steel cable that wraps the forefoot, so pressure is spread along the cable instead of pulled at two points, and you can add or release a click on the chairlift. The cuff still closes with a buckle and a power strap. A Dual BOA model, like the Hawx Ultra 130 S Dual BOA, adds a second dial on the cuff. We carry BOA versions of the Hawx Ultra, Hawx Prime and the XTD models.
Which Atomic ski boot is right for women?
Atomic's women's models use a women's specific cuff height and shape, and a cuff spoiler that adjusts the volume behind the calf. The Hawx Prime 85 BOA and Hawx Ultra 95 BOA suit progressing skiers, the Hawx Magna 105 S W is the wide 102 mm option, and the Hawx Ultra 105 S BOA and Hawx Ultra XTD 115 BOA are for strong and expert skiers. Your fitter chooses by the shape of your foot and how you ski, not by the label on the box.
Do you sell Atomic ski boots online?
No. Ski boots and liners are fitted in store only. The shell has to be chosen on your foot, and a custom liner or orthotic, if you add one, is built the same day.
