Head was founded in Baltimore in 1950 by Howard Head, an aeronautical engineer who thought a ski should be built like an aircraft fuselage. It worked: Head designs held more than half the US ski market through the 1960s. The company is Austrian now, based in Kennelbach, and its boot line is anchored by the Raptor race shell, drawn from World Cup racer feedback on a 96 mm last with a short cuff, a long toe box and a FIS-approved sole.
Four alpine lines matter for fit. Raptor is the race boot at 96 mm. Formula is the bootfitter's boot, a 98 mm LV or a 100 mm MV shell with four micro-adjustable buckles, cuff alignment and an adjustable flex. Kaliber arrived for 2026 on the same 100 mm medium last, closed by two BOA dials instead of the lower buckles, one on the shell and one on the cuff. Kore is the freeride boot: 100 mm again, with a hike and ski mechanism, GripWalk soles and Head's lightweight LYT Tech construction. Edge is the wide one at 102 mm. Every line has women's models on a shorter cuff.
Head marks the volume on the shell, LV, MV or HV, and its Form Fit shells are heat-moldable, so your fitter can still open the plastic where a foot needs it. Which last and flex you need comes from the shape of your foot, so every Head fitting starts with a 3D scan. Your fitter uses the scan to choose the shell and the size, and the boot can go home as it comes. If you want more, a custom orthotic holds your foot in a neutral position and a foam-injected Surefoot liner fills the space between your foot and the shell. Both are options at any fitting, not a requirement. Many of the Head boots we fit are sold as a shell, with no stock liner: a Surefoot liner goes in instead.

Scan
A 3D scan of both feet gives your fitter length, width and arch in millimeters. It is how we choose between the 96, 98, 100 and 102 mm lasts instead of guessing.

Custom orthotic
Optional at any fitting. Built from your scan in about 30 minutes, it holds your foot in a neutral position so the shell and liner above it can do their jobs.

Also optional. A Surefoot liner is foam-injected around your foot inside the Head shell, filling the space a stock liner leaves and setting the fit from day one.

Questions
Are Head ski boots narrow or wide?
Head builds its alpine boots in four widths and marks the volume on the shell. The Raptor WCR race boot is a 96 mm last. Formula LV is 98 mm. The Kore, the Kaliber and the Formula MV sit on a 100 mm medium last, and the Edge is Head's wide boot at 102 mm. All of those are measured across the forefoot at a size 26.5. Head's Form Fit shells are heat-moldable, so a fitter can open the plastic where your foot needs it. A scan tells us which last fits before you try one on.
Is the Head Kore a touring boot?
Not really. The Kore is Head's freeride boot. It has a hike and ski mechanism that frees the cuff for walking, GripWalk soles and Head's LYT Tech construction to hold the weight down, but it is built to ski down, and it sits on the same 100 mm last and the same Formula-derived shell shape as the rest of the line. Skiers who ride lifts and want a lighter boot that can walk up a bootpack choose it. If you are climbing for hours, that is a different boot.
Which Head boot is right for women?
Head builds women's models in every line, on a shorter cuff with women's cuff alignment and Form Fit moldable shells. The Formula 95 W LV is the narrow one, a 98 mm last for a slimmer foot. The Kaliber 95 W is the 100 mm medium boot, closed by two BOA dials, one on the lower shell and one on the cuff. Junior racers move into the Raptor WCR. Your fitter chooses by the shape of your foot and how you ski, not by the label on the boot.
What is Head's Liquid Fit?
Liquid Fit is Head's way of taking up space in a stock liner. A fitter injects a viscous material into pockets in the liner around the heel and the ankle, it sets in a few minutes, and it can be added or removed later at a Head dealer. It fills the two spots that most often leave a heel loose. A Surefoot liner takes a different route. It is foam-injected around your whole foot inside the shell, so the fit is set everywhere at once, and many of the Head boots we fit are sold as a shell with no stock liner at all.
What is the difference between the Head Formula and the Kaliber?
Formula is the buckled boot. It comes in a 98 mm LV and a 100 mm MV, with four micro-adjustable buckles, cuff alignment, an extended toe box and a flex you can step up or down, and it is the one bootfitters have worked on for years. Kaliber is new for the 2026 season and is built around the BOA Fit System, with one dial on the lower shell and a second on the cuff, on a 100 mm medium last. Skiers who want to tune the wrap a click at a time through the day choose the Kaliber.
Do you sell Head ski boots online?
No. Ski boots and liners are fitted in store only. The shell has to be chosen on your foot, and a custom liner or orthotic, if you add one, is built the same day.
