Tecnica has built boots in Giavera del Montello, in the Italian province of Treviso, since 1960, when the Zanatta family's work-boot shop became Calzaturificio Tecnica. Ten years later the same family drew the Moon Boot after Apollo 11 landed. Moon Boot is now its own brand inside the same Italian group: Surefoot fits Tecnica ski boots and does not sell Moon Boots.

Tecnica puts the width in the model name. LV is 98 mm across the forefoot at a size 26.5, MV is 100 mm and HV is 103 mm. Mach1 is the performance boot, in all three widths. Mach Sport is the same shape in a softer, warmer, easier-entry build. Mach BOA swaps the two lower buckles for a dial and cable, so the shell wraps the foot evenly and adjusts a click at a time. Cochise is the hybrid, an alpine boot with a walk mechanism and GripWalk soles, 99 mm standard, 102 mm in the HV. Women's models use a women's-specific cuff and liner. Juniors get the JT 4, the Mach1 Jr and the Cochise Team.

Every Tecnica shell is a C.A.S. shell, Custom Adaptive Shape: an anatomical shape that matches the shape of the foot, dimpled where feet usually need room so the plastic heats and holds a new shape. It is still built for an average foot. Which last and which flex you need comes from your foot and how you ski, not from how a boot feels in the shop for five minutes, so every Tecnica fitting at Surefoot starts with a 3D scan. Your fitter uses the scan to choose the shell and the size, and the boot can go home as it comes. If you want more, a custom orthotic holds your foot in a neutral position and a foam-injected Surefoot liner fills the space between your foot and the shell. Both are options at any fitting, not a requirement.

A 3D scan of both feet gives your fitter length, width and arch in millimeters. It is how we choose between the 98, 100 and 103 mm lasts instead of guessing.

Custom orthotic

Optional at any fitting. Built from your scan in about 30 minutes, it holds your foot in a neutral position so the shell and liner above it can do their jobs.

Custom liner

Also optional. A Surefoot liner is foam-injected around your foot inside the Tecnica shell, filling the space a stock liner leaves and setting the fit from day one.

What is the difference between Tecnica Mach1 LV, MV and HV?

The letters are the width of the lower shell. LV is 98 mm across the forefoot at a size 26.5, MV is 100 mm and HV is 103 mm. The flex number is separate, so a Mach1 LV 130 and a Mach1 HV 130 are the same stiffness on two different feet. All three sit on the same C.A.S. shell, shaped anatomically and dimpled in the usual problem areas so a fitter can heat it and open it where you need room. A scan tells us which width fits before you try one on.

Which Tecnica boot fits a wide foot?

Start with the HV models. Mach1 HV and Mach BOA HV both sit on a 103 mm last, and the Cochise HV is 102 mm, which is as wide as Tecnica builds. Width is only half of the answer. A foot can be wide across the forefoot and narrow at the heel, or wide with a low instep, and that combination decides the shell more than any single number. The scan measures both feet in millimeters, and your fitter works the C.A.S. shell and liner from there.

Is the Tecnica Cochise a touring boot?

It is a hybrid. The Cochise is built like an alpine boot, four buckles and a stiff cuff, with a walk mechanism that unlocks the cuff for the climb and locks it for the descent, GripWalk soles, and inserts for tech bindings on the DYN models. Tecnica lists 55 degrees of range of motion on the current Cochise HV. It suits skiers who ride lifts most days and hike for the rest, more than skiers who tour all day and want the lightest boot they can carry.

Do you sell Tecnica ski boots online?

No. Ski boots and liners are fitted in store only. The shell has to be chosen on your foot, and a custom liner or orthotic, if you add one, is built the same day. What flex is right for me?

Flex is the number in the model name, 85 through 130, and it describes how hard the boot is to bend forward. Heavier and stronger skiers, and anyone skiing fast on firm snow, go stiffer. Lighter skiers and softer snow go softer. There is no industry standard behind the number, so a 120 from one brand will not always feel like a 120 from another. Your fitter settles it in store with the shell on your foot, because the liner and the orthotic under it change how the boot feels.

Which Tecnica boot is right for women?

Tecnica's women's models use a women's-specific cuff and liner shaped to the calf. The Mach Sport LV 85 and Mach BOA MV 85 suit skiers still building confidence, the Mach1 MV 105, Mach BOA MV 95 and Mach BOA HV 95 and 105 suit strong all-mountain skiers, and the Mach1 LV 115 and the Cochise 105 and 115 are for experts. Your fitter chooses by foot shape and how you ski, not by the label.
